Approximately 12 minutes after dropping its' bombs, 42-102662 was
making a right hand turn and got caught in prop wash. It then collided
with B-17 42-31359, which was already damaged by flak. The collision
caused heavy tail damage to #102662, causing it to go down in a spiral.
#359 blew up. During descent, the tail separated from the rest of the
plane and was found 9km south of the Zechliner Hutte(cabin) in the
Rheinsberger Heath. The remainder of the plane went down near the
Zechliner Hutte, in Forest Area 4b, District Ostprignitz, 27km east of
Wittstock, Germany. The Germans reported that they found 5 burned
bodies in the wreckage, and buried them together in one single case in
the Communal Cemetery of Beerenbusch. The remains were later
brought to the USA and re-interred in Arlington National Cemetery.
