Aircraft forced to leave formation after being engaged over
Berlin by Heavy Flak Abteilung 437 . The flak inflicted damage
over the target and on return fighters attacked the B-17.
Finished off by guns of the 15th Flak Brigade, Hannover. It
crashed at Schmarbeck, 3km SE of Fassberg, Germany on the
shooting range of the Rheinmetall Borsig factory. The crash
site is about 20km WSW of Uelzen or 65km south of Hamburg.
All crew bailed out. Lt Buel died of wounds on the same day in
the infimary. His head hit a rock on landing and he was found
unconscious. He was buried by the Germans in a field-grave
near the brick works along the road to Gebharshagen. The rest
of the crew became prisoners of war.
