The Windy Lou, with three engines out but under control, was seen
dropping behind just after the Rally Point and was lost in the
clouds. It was last seen at coordinates 40*31'N and 08*55'E. Time
was 11:35 hrs; altitude was 25,000 ft., with a heading of 330 degrees.

Windy Lou: The original pilot, Phillip O. Darr, was from the windy city
of Chicago and his wife's name was Lucille, so the name "Windy
Lou" was affixed to the plane.
TAPS
NEWPORT, Coy H. of New London, NC passed away Nov. 6, 2001 at
the age of 77. Serving as a S/Sgt and tail gunner with the 8th AF on
a B-17 “Windy Lou”, he was shot down and held in Wetzler Transit
Camp, and Lufts 1 and 4. He was a member of the 452nd BG and the
Metrolina Chapter, AXPOW. Survivors include his wife of 55 years,
Margaret, 2 sons and 4 grandchildren.
