On return from the target, the formation was attacked by
about 12 FW-190s that hit the aircraft. the #2 engine was in
flames and all crew members bailed out. The plane crashed
at Todendorf, 1000 meters south of Puttgarden on Fehmarn
Island in the Baltic Sea. Writ and Quintana were killed when
they hit the open bomb bay. Their bodies were identified by
crew members. Waters suffered 2 broken arms.
