43-37833 THE UNINVITED
MACR 20347
MISSION #162 TARGET:SAARBRUCKEN
NOVEMBER 9, 1944

This plane crashed near Saarbrucken, Germany after receiving a direct flak hit to
the number 3 engine. The plane left the formation and straggled. When last
seen, three props were still turning, but smoke was coming from the number 3
engine. A call was received over VHF that the plane was requesting an
emergency landing field. They never made it, as the plane started to burn.
Fortunately, the entire crew bailed out safely. All crew members were picked up
by the Germans and taken prisoner. Fannon was the only one to evade capture,
but only for several days. He was captured after trying to steal food from a
farmhouse. All the officers were eventually taken to Baleria, a compound north
of Stalag Luft III. The crew on the plane this day was made up entirely of the
regular crew. Only six regular crew members were aboard: Bickford, Fannon,
Turner, Van Loozenoord, Caldwell, and Williams. The other three were
substituting for regular crew members Walter Waite(CP), Harold Hall, and Lee
Lynch. Click on Van Loozenoord's name for a nice story about the crew and their
heroic adventures. The picture of the crew on this website, notes the plane
name as Lady Jeannette, but I am pretty sure it is The Uninvited.
