44-8527  SWEET STUFF

MACR: None
Mission # 197
Target: Chemnitz
Date: February 6, 1945
While on a bombing mission on the marshaling yards in Chemnitz, 44-8527
had a flak shell pass through the cockpit hitting the oxygen bottles and
hydraulic lines which caused an explosion. The shell did not explode. Lt
Gay was able to get the plane back to the emergency landing field at
Woodbridge, England. The nose had been blasted. The picture to the right
shows some of the damage to the plane...absolutely amazing how Lt Gay
managed to bring this plane and his crew back safely. Imagine flying all
the way back to England with a damaged B-17 that looked like this! Wow!
One helluva' a pilot!!!

son of Lt Hubert Gay. Many thanks!)
