STALAG LUFT III

projectionist, following in his father's footsteps
These sketches
are from Bob
Neary's book,
which was only
made available to
POW survivors.
Bob was in the
same section of
the prison(west
compound) as my
uncle. I was
fortunate enough
to get a copy of
this book from my
uncle.

Pictures below are from the actual site of Stalag Luft III as it looks today. I took these pictures on a
visit in November 2007. It was very cold, quiet, and nobody there but me, my son(Iraq Veteran),
and a man on a bicycle checking out the various signs. Except for the 60+ years of vegetation
growth, the entire grounds look untouched, as though WWII ended the day I was there. There are
artifacts everywhere and holes where people have dug up various items. I found an old German
coffee cup and a tube of toothpaste. Pieces of broken plates and cups were strewn all over. The
tunnels from the Great Escape are well marked, but the remainder of this huge POW camp is
marked by mere signs. There is a Polish Military Training Center adjacent to Stalag Luft III. I would
love to get some kind of government grant and fix the place up!
I have included some period pictures to give you a general idea of the camp.
THE WEST COMPOUND

This is the section of the camp where my Uncle Bob and fellow
American officers stayed. It is marked by one sign and nothing
else. Note the use of the Bob Neary sketches on the signs.
